Residents across Maharashtra are advised to stay vigilant as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed several districts on yellow alert for impending rain and thunderstorms. The weather advisory was issued on Wednesday morning, prompted by a developing weather system in the Arabian Sea that is gradually approaching the state’s western coastline.
According to the IMD’s 7 AM nowcast bulletin, light rainfall is highly anticipated over the next three hours in key areas such as Jalgaon, Dhule, Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Sangli, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, and Pune districts. Authorities are urging citizens to remain alert, steer clear of waterlogged areas, and take necessary precautions during this period of anticipated wet weather.
Widespread Showers Expected
Throughout the day, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast for various parts of Maharashtra. The IMD also highlighted the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall over the Konkan and Goa region, as well as over Madhya Maharashtra.
Adding to the caution, the IMD has warned of potential thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, with speeds expected to reach 30-40 kmph, across the state and its neighboring regions over the next five days.
Understanding the Arabian Sea Depression
This shift in weather patterns is attributed to a depression forming over the east-central Arabian Sea. This system has been observed to move northeastward at a speed of 8 kmph over the past six hours.
As of 2:30 AM on October 29, the system’s approximate location was noted as:
- 440 km southwest of Veraval, Gujarat
- 420 km west-southwest of Mumbai, Maharashtra
- 570 km west-northwest of Panjim, Goa
- 820 km northwest of Mangalore, Karnataka
- 840 km north-northwest of Aminidivi, Lakshadweep Islands
The IMD anticipates this system will continue its northeastward trajectory across the eastern-central Arabian Sea for the next 36 hours, steadily influencing the weather conditions along India’s western coast.
Gujarat and Konkan on Alert
The meteorological department has also forecast light to moderate rainfall for the Gujarat region from October 29 to October 31. Saurashtra and Kutch areas, in particular, could experience isolated very heavy rainfall between October 28 and October 31.
While the system has not yet intensified into a deep depression or cyclone, weather experts are advising coastal communities in Maharashtra and Gujarat to prepare for intermittent rain, potentially rough seas, and temporary wind gusts as the weather phenomenon draws nearer to the landmass.
