Mumbai Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) following a demonstration by NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar. Pawar showcased how a fake Aadhaar card could be easily generated using US President Donald Trump’s name, aiming to highlight alleged fraud in voter registrations.
During a briefing on October 16, Pawar reportedly demonstrated the ease with which fake Aadhaar cards could be produced via a website, suggesting their potential misuse for creating fraudulent voter registrations. This demonstration, however, attracted legal scrutiny after BJP social media cell co-convener Dhananjay Wagaskar filed a police complaint.
Wagaskar alleged that the video contained false and inflammatory claims against a party office-bearer and called for action against those operating the website. Responding to the complaint, Mumbai cyber police have registered a case against two unidentified individuals. They face charges including forgery, identity theft, and spreading false information under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Information Technology Act.
The FIR emphasizes that the creation of bogus Aadhaar cards through fraudulent websites can mislead the public, erode trust in official institutions, and potentially foster societal discord.
Pawar’s demonstration was part of his broader concerns about alleged voter manipulation, particularly after what he described as unfavorable results for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the previous Lok Sabha elections. He has claimed instances of bogus voter registrations, deletion of genuine voters, and misuse of identities of deceased individuals.
Citing official data, Pawar pointed out a significant surge in new voter registrations. While the period between 2019 and 2024 saw an average of 6.5 lakh new voters annually, the six months leading up to the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections saw an alarming increase to 48 lakh new voters. In his Karjat Jamkhed constituency, he reported 14,292 new voters added, 5,360 names deleted, and 14,162 duplicate entries.
Furthermore, he alleged that Aadhaar cards were being manipulated with altered photos and names to register voters in different constituencies. Police investigations are currently underway to identify the individuals behind the fake website and ascertain if voter data was indeed manipulated.
