The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court announced on Thursday, October 9, 2025, that Pon Vasanth, the husband of Madurai Mayor Indrani, has been granted bail. Justice S. Srimathy issued the bail order, subject to certain conditions.
Mr. Vasanth is a key accused in the extensive property tax fraud that has plagued the Madurai Corporation. He was arrested in Chennai on August 12 by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is actively probing the multi-crore scam.
The prosecution’s statements indicate that the fraudulent activities were first uncovered in September 2024. It was then that C. Dinesh Kumar, who was the Madurai Corporation Commissioner at the time, identified several irregularities in the official records and proceeded to lodge a police complaint.
An subsequent audit further exposed that property taxes for a total of 150 buildings had been intentionally reduced, bypassing all proper procedures. This review brought to light numerous inconsistencies within the records maintained on UTIS, an online platform designed for property tax management. Prosecutors assert that financial inducements were exchanged to facilitate these illegal tax reductions.
