The Madras High Court has taken decisive action regarding the recent stampede during actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), to be headed by senior IPS officer Asra Garg, has been ordered to investigate the incident, which tragically claimed 41 lives and left over 60 people injured. Garg, currently the Inspector General of Police for the North Zone, will lead the inquiry.
In addition to the SIT probe, the High Court also addressed a plea that sought a CBI investigation into the matter. The court dismissed this plea, with the single-judge bench suggesting that the petitioner approach the Madurai bench of the High Court for further consideration.
Furthermore, the court reportedly criticized the organizers and members of Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for the alleged mismanagement of the crowd and the ensuing chaos. Specifically, the judge questioned the party’s ability to control mob behavior and prevent instances of property destruction during Vijay’s roadshow.
In a related development, the Madras High Court rejected an anticipatory bail plea filed by N Sathish Kumar, a district secretary of the TVK party, who was seeking bail in connection with the stampede case. The court’s actions underscore the seriousness with which the incident is being treated, emphasizing the need for accountability and thorough investigation into the failures that led to the tragic loss of life.
