Male Mahadeshwara (M.M.) Hills, now officially designated a ‘plastic-free zone,’ is gearing up for a truly ‘Green Deepavali.’ Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag has issued clear directives to officials, emphasizing strict enforcement of the plastic ban throughout the upcoming temple festivities, ensuring a celebration that honors both tradition and environment.
During a recent video conference held on Monday, Ms. Nag reviewed the comprehensive preparations for the Deepavali Jatra Mahotsav, which will take place from October 18 to 22. With approximately 30,000 devotees anticipated daily, the focus is squarely on maintaining ecological integrity.
To uphold this commitment, authorities are mandated to ensure absolute adherence to the prohibition of plastic materials—including their use, distribution, and transport—within and around the sacred temple premises. Public awareness campaigns will also be launched to inform visitors about these vital restrictions.
Dedicated check-posts will be strategically established at all entry points leading to the hill shrine. Any plastic items found on devotees will be promptly confiscated. Furthermore, the Male Mahadeshwara Development Authority is actively championing the adoption of sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives to plastic.
Organizations and benevolent donors intending to provide food and water to pilgrims are now required to utilize only biodegradable options, such as paper plates and cups. They must also register and secure prior authorization, taking full responsibility for the efficient collection and environmentally sound disposal of all waste generated during their distribution efforts.
National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers will play a crucial role, positioned at both Taalabetta and M.M. Hills, engaging with devotees to foster cooperation and collective responsibility in maintaining a pristine, plastic-free environment.
Concluding her address, Ms. Nag extended a heartfelt appeal to all devotees, donors, and local traders, urging them to unite in making this Deepavali an exemplary eco-friendly celebration. Their collective effort is essential in preserving the revered sanctity of the hill shrine and solidifying its status as a vibrant, plastic-free sanctuary.
