Residents of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry can expect heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours as a low-pressure system is likely to develop in the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21. The Regional Meteorological Department shared this forecast on Sunday.
Specifically, the ghat regions of districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, and Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu, along with parts of Kerala, are predicted to experience heavy rain in the coming day.
For Chennai and its surrounding areas, the Met department anticipates occasional light to moderate showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
This comes after Tamil Nadu has already experienced significant rainfall for the past few days, coinciding with the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon on October 16.
Data from the Met office indicates that Kothagiri in the Nilgiris district recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 14 cm, while Sirkali in Mayiladuthurai district received the least at 1 cm.
The department’s bulletin further explained that an Upper Air Cyclonic circulation is currently present over the South Andaman Sea and the adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 1.5 km in altitude. “Under its influence, a Low Pressure is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, 2025. It is likely to move northwestwards and concentrate further into a depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours,” the bulletin stated.
Additionally, squally weather conditions with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected along the South Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin area.
Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea. Those currently at sea in the South Bay of Bengal and the adjoining West-central Bay of Bengal are urged to return to the coast by the morning of October 21.
