The ambitious ‘Kerasamrudhi Mission,’ initiated by the Land Use department to foster the growth of the esteemed Kuttiady coconut, is set to receive a significant boost through new collaborations, particularly with the tourism sector. The Responsible Tourism Mission Society’s involvement is anticipated to bring the highly successful ‘Kumarakom model’ to Kuttiady. This means that every aspect of the region’s unique coconut palms and their lush orchards will be transformed into a wealth of tourism experiences.
Imagine tourists enjoying authentic activities like coconut climbing, crafting with coconut leaves, and observing coir manufacturing – these could become truly immersive experiences in these orchards. ‘Furthermore,’ stated Yasmin L. Rasheed, the State Land Use Commissioner, ‘this initiative will open up the global market for high-quality, value-added products derived from Kuttiady coconuts.’ The department has aptly branded this tourism-focused endeavor with the tagline ‘Kuttiady to the World.’
Ms. Rasheed emphasized that ‘The Kerasamrudhi project extends beyond just the coconut and its farmers; it encompasses the entire region.’ The comprehensive plan includes crop development, expanding cultivation areas, adopting new technologies, securing a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag and patents, building local capacity, and fostering strong community involvement. She added, ‘A dedicated core group will focus on enhancing processing techniques, developing innovative coconut products, and revitalizing export strategies.’ The Kunnummal block, the primary cultivation area for this coconut variety, boasts a distinct geography and microclimate, which will be crucial in its promotion as an attractive tourist destination.
To address crucial challenges, a ‘coconut army’ has been established within the block. This specialized group aims to fill existing gaps, such as the shortage of skilled coconut climbers, the need for technical expertise among Farmer-Producer Organisations, and the efficient manufacturing of value-added coconut products.
The Coconut Development Board is spearheading the effort to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Kuttiady coconut, providing both financial and technological support. Concurrently, Nabard has committed to facilitating credit access for the coconut orchards. Ms. Rasheed confirmed, ‘The foundational framework for the project is now complete. Implementation can commence as soon as all necessary collaborations are formally documented.’
The Kunnummal block panchayat is serving as the primary implementing agency for this project, with the Land Use department taking on the coordinating role. The initiative is slated to begin operations in January 2026 and is projected to reach full completion over approximately eight years.
