The Krishna district is grappling with rising floodwaters as the river swells, prompting officials to issue urgent alerts across downstream areas. On Monday, revenue and police teams worked tirelessly, ensuring the safe relocation of pregnant women and over 100 families to specially designated relief centers.
Following the release of approximately 6.84 lakh cusecs of water by irrigation authorities, residents in low-lying villages have been urged to seek higher ground. Several island communities have seen floodwaters spill onto their roads and inundate streets, with water flowing over ‘saptas’ (likely local bridges or pathways), causing significant disruption.
District Collector D.K. Balaji confirmed that seven relief camps have been established across Penamaluru, Nagayalanka, and Mopidevi mandals. He highlighted the proactive measures taken, stating, “We have stationed 22 boats in Thotlavallur mandal, ready for immediate deployment should further evacuations become necessary. Strict instructions have been issued to provide essential amenities, including hot meals, milk, and breakfast, to all flood victims residing in these camps.”
Collector Balaji personally oversaw the flood situation, visiting key locations such as the Puligadda Aqueduct and the villages of Kokkiligadda, Bobbarlanka, and Kothapalem in Mopidevi mandal. He directed irrigation, panchayat raj, police, and revenue officials to remain vigilant and ensure adequate stockpiles of necessary supplies, anticipating a potential increase in flood levels over the next two days.
During his visit to Challapalli mandal, the Collector engaged directly with residents of Nadakuduru village, appealing for their cooperation with the authorities in moving to the safety of the relief camps.
