A significant leap forward in modernizing public transportation is underway in Kozhikode with the impending launch of BUSZ, an advanced smart mobility solution. Designed to revolutionize the commuting experience through intelligent communication systems, this project is currently in its implementation phase, backed by the enthusiastic support of several bus operators. BUSZ promises a comprehensive suite of digital tools, including precise real-time bus tracking, an intuitive mobile application for passengers, cutting-edge smart information displays at stops, and automated announcement systems on board buses.
Initial discussions with leaders from the bus operators’ association were highly successful, with the majority expressing strong endorsement for this innovative IT initiative. Buoyed by this positive reception from key stakeholders, the project is now advancing towards district-level authorities for final approval and official rollout. Notably, BUSZ has already successfully completed a two-year trial period across various routes, including Kunnamangalam, Mukkam, Thamarassery, and Thiruvambadi.
One of the most appealing aspects of this GPS-enabled smart system, developed by Mukkom-based Busz Transit Solutions, is its free availability to bus operators. The operational and maintenance costs associated with this public service will be covered by revenue generated through approved advertising displays. Beyond its core tracking features, the digital toolkit will also enable timely bus schedule announcements at major terminals and facilitate the broadcasting of crucial public alerts and news updates.
M. Anvar, a young software developer and CEO of Busz Transit Solutions, explains, “Leveraging advanced GPS technology, the system offers live bus tracking, accurate estimated arrival times, and stop-specific information. This ensures passengers are constantly updated, while operators can manage their fleets with unprecedented efficiency. This is a proven technology widely adopted in several international cities.” He further elaborates that the companion mobile app, soon to be available to all commuters, will empower users to meticulously plan their journeys, monitor buses in real-time, easily find nearby stops, and receive instant updates directly on their smartphones.
To enhance the travel experience, smart screens will be strategically installed at both bus stations and inside vehicles, ensuring prompt delivery of essential transportation details. Plans are also progressing to integrate these systems into all KSRTC depots. These displays will feature multilingual options and can be customized to suit local needs. For added assistance, particularly for the elderly and visually impaired passengers, buses will be outfitted with automated audio-visual announcements triggered by GPS, thereby reducing reliance on drivers and significantly improving overall accessibility and convenience.
Manoj Babu, a retired Traffic Police officer now involved with the project, states, “Our vision is to foster a collaborative environment among public transport operators, technology providers, and local administrators to create urban mobility that is smarter, safer, and inherently more reliable. We anticipate securing clearance from district-level authorities very soon.” He emphasizes that BUSZ offers a perfect solution for both commuters and bus operators to experience the profound benefits of technologically integrated smart transportation.
