Excitement is building in Kozhikode as Local Self-Government Minister M.B. Rajesh prepares to inaugurate a vibrant new food street and vending market at the iconic Kozhikode beach on October 20. This initiative marks a significant step in urban development, aiming to rehabilitate 90 existing beach vendors by providing them with dedicated spaces in the new food street. A special convention for prominent city personalities is also scheduled as part of the grand opening celebrations.
The newly designed food bunks, crafted by De-earth architects and manufactured by Metal Industries, add a modern touch to the area. To support the local entrepreneurs, Kerala Bank has extended loans to vendors for the purchase of these new, attractive stalls.
With this launch, Kozhikode beach will officially become a designated regional vending zone, ensuring a ban on all unauthorized selling activities. Health Officer Munavar Rahman emphasized that the new model food street is committed to offering clean, hygienic, and wholesome food options to all visitors.
This ambitious project is a collaborative effort, a joint venture between the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) and the Department of Food Safety, alongside the Kozhikode Corporation. NULM and the Food Safety department are contributing ₹3.44 crore, while the Corporation is investing ₹1.85 crore. The Corporation has also ensured essential amenities like drinking water and electricity are readily available, with plans to provide uniforms for the vendors in the near future.
Strict guidelines will govern the operations of the food street. Vendors are prohibited from transferring or renting out their licenses and bunks, with any violations leading to immediate cancellation. The sale or use of narcotic products during work hours is strictly forbidden, as is the storage of explosives or acid within the bunks. Furthermore, a crucial health and safety measure requires all cooking oil to be changed daily.
Overseeing the operations will be a dedicated management committee, comprising a street manager and six cleaning staff, ensuring smooth functioning and adherence to standards.
However, the project hasn’t been without its controversies. Councillors from the United Democratic Front (UDF) have voiced concerns and alleged corruption in the project, stating that further details will be disclosed on Monday.
