The Kollam City police officially launched their new community initiative, ‘Surakshitha Theeram’ (meaning ‘Safe Shore’), this past Saturday. The project was inaugurated by MLA Sujith Vijayanpillai at the bustling Sakthikulangara harbour.
A key component of ‘Surakshitha Theeram’ is the comprehensive registration of all migrant workers in the coastal areas within Kollam city’s jurisdiction. This registration drive is set to be completed over the next two months. The successful implementation of this vital project is a collaborative effort, bringing together several important stakeholders, including local boat operators’ associations, prominent labour unions from the thriving fisheries sector, the dedicated Coastal Police force, and the state’s Fisheries department. The overarching goal is to foster a more secure and integrated environment for the migrant worker community, who play a crucial role in the region’s economy.
