Kochi is buzzing with anticipation as preparations for the highly awaited visit of the FIFA World Cup-winning Argentinian football team, led by global superstar Lionel Messi, are projected to conclude by the end of this month. Putta Vimaladitya, the District Police Chief (Kochi City), shared this update on Monday after a key meeting with various stakeholders involved in organizing the event.
Vimaladitya confirmed that all major departments have commenced their dedicated efforts for the upcoming event. He emphasized the seamless coordination between the district administration, the police, and other relevant departments to ensure all necessary services are in place. The collective goal is to complete all required arrangements efficiently by month-end.
Organizers are anticipating a massive turnout of nearly 50,000 fans at the stadium. The District Police Chief noted that an expert group is currently assessing the structural stability of the venue to determine its safe capacity, and arrangements will be made in accordance with their findings.
Addressing concerns about potential overcrowding and the challenge of managing immense crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the Argentinian team, particularly Lionel Messi, Mr. Vimaladitya assured that a robust system would be implemented. This system will ensure that only individuals holding valid tickets gain access to the immediate vicinity of the stadium.
Furthermore, officials are exploring options to livestream the friendly match on large screens at alternative locations, providing more opportunities for fans to experience the event. Plans are also underway to make necessary arrangements if a dedicated fans’ meet is organized.
Regarding security, Vimaladitya stated that while the exact number of police personnel is yet to be finalized, the force will be significantly bolstered through the strategic deployment of modern technology, including CCTV surveillance and drones. Barricades will also be utilized to manage crowd flow effectively.
According to event sponsors, Argentina is slated to face Australia in a friendly fixture at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor on November 17.
