Inspired by the remarkable success of the inaugural ‘We Park’ at SN College Junction in Kollam, the Kerala Tourism Department is gearing up for a significant state-wide expansion. This innovative project, focused on transforming neglected areas beneath flyovers into attractive and sustainable public spaces, will now bring life to 20 additional locations across Kerala.
To kickstart this ambitious expansion, administrative approval has already been granted for three new ‘We Park’ projects within the Thrissur district. Meanwhile, detailed project reports (DPRs) are actively being developed for other prospective sites identified throughout the state, ensuring a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to urban rejuvenation.
The ‘We Park’ initiative is envisioned by the department as a flagship model for infrastructure development in Kerala, aligning perfectly with its innovative design policy. The core objective is to convert these previously underutilized spaces beneath flyovers into vibrant, welcoming public areas. The Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL) has been entrusted as the nodal agency to steer this transformation. Each park is designed to offer a rich array of amenities, including charming walkways, artistically painted sidewalls, courts for badminton and volleyball, comfortable seating, and even open-air amphitheatres. Families will appreciate the dedicated playgrounds with modern equipment for children, along with open-air gyms for fitness enthusiasts. Comprehensive safety features like security cameras and proper lighting systems will be installed. Lush green lawns, convenient cafes, and clean restroom facilities will further enhance the visitor experience. After the DPR for each location is finalized, the implementing agency will be chosen through a transparent open tender process.
Enhancing Community Life with Diverse Recreational Facilities
Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding and beautifying neglected public areas by transforming them into dynamic recreational zones. This initiative will offer accessible public spaces where friends and families can gather, participate in various sports, and enjoy cultural activities. Ultimately, the government aims to cultivate greener, more nature-friendly urban environments across Kerala through these transformative projects.
Among the first to receive administrative sanction are projects beneath the railway overbridges at Athani and Mulankunnathukavu in Wadakkancherry, as well as the Chembissery railway overbridge, which links the Wadakkancherry and Thrissur constituencies. All three locations have secured essential clearances from the Public Works Department. The estimated costs for these initial projects are ₹70.60 lakh for Athani, ₹55.30 lakh for Mulankunnathukavu, and ₹78.70 lakh for Chembissery.
The tendering phase for these specific projects is expected to commence shortly. A key feature of the ‘We Parks’ concept is the transformation of these under-flyover areas into bustling centers for social interaction and cultural events. Beyond serving local residents with sports and recreation, these parks will also provide convenient stopovers for travelers along public routes, offering essential amenities to those on the go.
