Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has announced that the newly launched Water Metro service in Mattancherry is poised to dramatically revitalize West Kochi. Speaking at the inauguration of the Mattancherry and Willingdon Island Water Metro terminals, the Chief Minister highlighted the project’s pivotal role in regional development.
Hailed as a groundbreaking initiative in Kerala’s infrastructure landscape, the Water Metro transcends mere transportation. It establishes a crucial link, seamlessly connecting diverse areas like Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. This enhanced connectivity is expected to significantly improve travel between Kochi city and West Kochi, directly elevating the living standards of residents in both regions.
Mr. Vijayan emphasized that beyond its commuter benefits, the Water Metro is strategically positioned to make substantial contributions to regional economic growth and significantly bolster the tourism sector. He noted that the system will serve a broad spectrum of users, including daily visitors to the city, island communities, and tourists exploring the scenic waterways.
The Water Metro project aims to implement a world-class water transport network. Tender processes have already commenced for new terminals in Edakochi and Thoppumpady, while the Kadamakkudy terminal is nearing completion. Once these are operational, a comprehensive water-based circuit will connect key areas such as Ernakulam, Thoppumpady, Mattancherry, Kumbalam, and Edakochi, forming an extensive and efficient aquatic transit system.
Since its inauguration in 2023, the Water Metro has already served over 5 million passengers, comprising both regular commuters and leisure tourists. Its success has garnered international attention, with several State governments across India and even foreign nations seeking Kerala’s expertise in establishing similar water transport solutions. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is currently conducting feasibility studies for Water Metro implementation in 20 other Indian cities, including Mumbai.
Chief Minister Vijayan extended his gratitude to the Varapuzha Archdiocese for their generous donation of 22 cents of land, crucial for the Mattancherry Water Metro terminal. He proudly stated that Kerala consistently sets benchmarks in various sectors, having developed some of the most exemplary poverty alleviation models nationwide.
Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, who presided over the event, lauded the Water Metro as the world’s inaugural and most extensive integrated water transport system. He further commended the initiative for its positive environmental impact, particularly its role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Lokanath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL, acknowledged the significant engineering and land acquisition hurdles faced during the construction of the Mattancherry Water Metro terminal, which is uniquely built entirely on water. He affirmed that the Water Metro will offer a much-needed solution for employees and visitors to reach Willingdon Island, bypassing conventional traffic congestion.
