Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the dedicated technology arm of the General Education Department, has successfully rolled out cutting-edge online management portals. These new platforms are set to fully digitize the National Service Scheme (NSS) activities across all higher secondary (HS) and vocational higher secondary (VHSE) schools throughout the State.
This initiative marks a significant milestone as it’s the first time in India that the administrative functions for NSS units, encompassing an estimated two lakh students, are being entirely moved to an online system. This transformative shift officially begins with the 2025-26 academic year.
These innovative portals are designed to dramatically simplify operations and alleviate the administrative burden on NSS program officers (POs) in schools. According to K. Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE, POs can now effortlessly schedule all activities in line with their action plans and record attendance for each session instantly and digitally.
A key enhancement is the complete migration of all essential records, including the cash book, from manual upkeep to a fully online format. This will drastically cut down on the need for cumbersome physical paperwork, making processes more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Beyond administrative tasks, the portals facilitate thorough evaluation of unit activities, orientation programs, and community camps. Evaluations, whether for individual camps or across districts, will now be conducted systematically by the relevant district and State authorities directly through the integrated system.
This digital leap builds on the proven success of KITE’s ‘Little KITES’ IT Clubs, which already manage every aspect of student involvement—from selection and attendance to camp logistics, financial tracking, grading, and certificate distribution—entirely online for 1.8 lakh students annually. The new NSS system mirrors this efficiency, boosting data transparency and offering program officers and other key authorities immediate access to comprehensive reports on volunteers, units, and all their activities.
