The Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) is rapidly transforming internet accessibility across the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced in the Kerala Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, that K-FON has already achieved a significant milestone: providing one lakh (100,000) internet connections. Furthermore, the network has secured the necessary license to offer internet services throughout Kerala, marking a crucial step towards its vision of “internet for all.”
Addressing queries from MLAs K. Premkumar, T.P. Ramakrishnan, I.B. Satheesh, and M.S. Arun Kumar regarding K-FON’s progress towards universal internet access, Mr. Vijayan outlined ambitious plans for the coming year. He stated that K-FON aims to expand its reach to 2.5 lakh (250,000) connections by next year, ensuring robust internet services are available to citizens in both urban and rural areas.
The initiative also prioritizes digital inclusion, with 14,194 households from economically weaker sections already receiving free K-FON connections. Additionally, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds have facilitated free connections for 103 tribal households in Kottoor, Thiruvananthapuram, and 396 tribal households in Attappady, Palakkad district.
Connecting Government & Businesses
K-FON’s impact extends to public services and commercial sectors. Currently, 23,355 government offices across Kerala are connected to the network. The project also boasts 79,123 active Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) commercial connections, alongside 220 leased line internet connections and 265 broadband connections for various corporate establishments and small & medium enterprises. This brings the total number of K-FON connections to an impressive 119,910.
The infrastructure underpinning K-FON is robust, leveraging the existing network of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The network utilizes ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) and OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) cables, with over 30,272 kilometers of fibre optic cable already laid. K-FON’s central operational hub, the Network Operating Centre, is strategically located at Infopark, Kochi, from where internet services are efficiently distributed statewide through 375 Points of Presence (POPs) at KSEB substations.
Chief Minister Vijayan also addressed and dismissed various complaints regarding K-FON’s internet speed and customer service, asserting that all reported issues are actively being resolved. He emphasized the government’s commitment to the network’s reliability, noting that all government offices and institutions with K-FON access have been instructed to use it as their primary internet service, provided there are no disruptions or speed limitations.
