The comprehensive reconstruction of the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road is now in its final stages, marking significant progress for a key infrastructure project in Kerala. Officials from the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) announced during a District Development Committee meeting that an impressive 95% of the work has been successfully completed. Most major components of the project are now finished, with only the Pallathuruthy bridge remaining, which is anticipated to be operational within the next couple of months.
Initially slated for completion in 2023, the project—primarily aimed at mitigating severe road flooding during the monsoon season—experienced delays. These were mainly attributed to the time required to secure approval for the revised budget concerning the construction of a new, parallel bridge at Pallathuruthy.
This ambitious 24.14-kilometer road is being redeveloped under the ‘Rebuild Kerala’ initiative, with an initial investment of ₹671.66 crore. Upon its full completion, the total cost is projected to reach approximately ₹880 crore.
Extensive Structural Upgrades
The project’s scope is extensive, encompassing the construction of four major bridges, five semi-elevated flyovers, fourteen minor bridges, three causeways, and sixty-four culverts, among other crucial works. Authorities have confirmed that the Kidangara, Nedumudi, and Muttar bridges are already complete and functional. Steady progress continues on the Pallathuruthy bridge, which is the last major structure awaiting completion.
Five key flyovers—located at Pandarakalam, Nazareth Junction, Jyothi Junction, Mankombu, and Onnamkara—have already been opened to traffic, significantly easing local commutes. Additionally, all smaller bridges, causeways, and culverts are now in use. The road itself has received advanced surfacing with dense bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete, ensuring durability and smooth travel. Furthermore, land-leveling work spanning seven kilometers has also been finalized.
The upgraded AC road features two lanes with dedicated footpaths, boasting a width of 13 meters. The entire Alappuzha-Changanassery road project is being executed through a collaborative effort by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society and the Evrascon joint venture.
