The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, spearheaded by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], is preparing for a significant solidarity event on October 2nd, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. This gathering in Kozhikode is dedicated to expressing unwavering support for the people of Palestine.
LDF district leaders confirmed on Monday, September 29, 2025, that Abdullah M. Abu Shawesh, the Palestinian Ambassador to India, will be a key attendee at the event, scheduled to take place at the Muthalakkulam Ground in Kozhikode city.
The solidarity meet will be inaugurated by M.V. Govindan, the CPI(M) Kerala State secretary. Other notable speakers include P. Sandosh Kumar, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Communist Party of India (CPI); A.K. Saseendran, Minister for Forest and Wildlife from the Nationalist Congress Party; and M.V. Shreyams Kumar of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, alongside other prominent figures.
According to M. Mehboob, CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretary, Israel’s current military actions in Gaza constitute ‘genocide.’ He further criticized both Israel and the United States for allegedly disregarding the widespread demand from a significant majority of United Nations members for the recognition of Palestine’s sovereignty and its declaration as an independent nation.
Mehboob asserted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s reluctance to cease the conflict stems from the unwavering support he receives from the United States.
Meanwhile, LDF leaders firmly rejected accusations that the Palestine solidarity meet was strategically timed to influence communal sentiments in the state, especially following the recent Global Ayyappa Sangamam organized by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
Both Mr. Mehboob and P. Gavas, CPI Kozhikode district secretary, clarified that communist parties have a long-standing and consistent position on international affairs. They emphasized that this event is not an isolated instance of solidarity with Palestine and is entirely unrelated to the Ayyappa Sangamam.
Mr. Mehboob suggested that the United Democratic Front might be concerned by the significant support received at the Pampa event, which was positioned in opposition to ‘saffronization politics’.
When questioned about the possibility of such events alienating minority communities, he responded with a definitive ‘no.’
