Member of Parliament Shafi Parambil, who reportedly suffered injuries during an alleged police lathi-charge in Perambra, has officially lodged a complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Parliament’s Privileges Committee. He is calling for firm action against the police officers implicated in the incident.
The complaint, filed on Monday, specifically names District Police Chief (Kozhikode Rural) K.E. Baiju, Perambra Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) N. Sunil Kumar, and Vadakara Dy.SP Hariprasad, among others. Mr. Parambil alleges that these officers either ordered or directly participated in the assault.
Allegations of Unprovoked Force
According to Mr. Parambil, District Police Chief Baiju initially admitted over the phone that an “unfortunate incident” had taken place. However, Mr. Baiju later publicly denied that any police-led lathi-charge occurred. The MP asserts that he was at a protest event in Perambra, where no disturbance to public order was expected. He claims that the police intervened abruptly and used force without any prior provocation.
In light of Mr. Baiju’s recent statement suggesting a policeman’s involvement in causing issues at the protest site, Mr. Parambil is pushing for a comprehensive investigation. The MP himself sustained a nasal bone fracture and underwent surgery immediately following the incident on October 10.
