Kerala’s Health Department is spearheading a robust action plan, integral to the state government’s overarching mission to eliminate extreme poverty. This initiative is designed to guarantee vital doorstep healthcare services for families identified as extremely poor, ensuring that medical support reaches those who need it most.
Starting September 28, health workers will embark on a month-long drive, visiting the homes of these vulnerable families. During these visits, they will provide crucial medical services, including a range of blood tests. Health Minister Veena George has emphasized the strict adherence to established service protocols to ensure the highest standard of care.
The comprehensive blood tests offered during these home visits will include complete blood count, RBS (Random Blood Sugar), blood urea/serum creatinine, SGOT/SGPT (liver function tests), lipid profile, and HbsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen). Samples will be collected directly from the homes for convenience.
Crucially, the program includes robust follow-up care for individuals requiring further medical attention. Dedicated care coordinators will be stationed at local health centers to ensure continuous support and proper management of patient cases.
Collaborative efforts with relevant departments are underway to facilitate the transportation of pregnant women to hospitals for delivery and to ensure that residents from tribal communities receive timely medical assistance when needed. Local bodies are also encouraged to engage health volunteers as hospital companions, providing much-needed support to patients.
Special emphasis will be placed on the care of specific vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, individuals with chronic illnesses, bedridden patients, malnourished children, the elderly, and those living with disabilities. Their unique needs will be prioritized within the healthcare framework.
Under this ongoing initiative, health workers will conduct monthly visits to the homes of the extremely poor, providing continuous medical care and integrating them into the government’s various free treatment schemes. This sustained effort aims to build a healthier and more equitable Kerala.
