In a momentous occasion for regional development, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan proudly inaugurated the Thottappally Naluchira bridge, a groundbreaking project hailed as a prestigious achievement for the state. “This inauguration marks the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration for the local community,” stated the Chief Minister. Completed at an impressive cost of ₹60.73 crore, the bridge employs a sophisticated cable-stayed design, featuring specialized cables that elegantly support its deck. This innovative structure is a pioneer for the state.
For the residents of Naluchira, who previously relied solely on boats for transportation, the bridge offers immense relief. It effectively shaves approximately 15 minutes off their travel time to the town and the national highway. With its distinctive bird’s wing-like silhouette, this graceful bridge is also anticipated to draw in tourists, adding a new scenic highlight to the region.

Spanning the vital leading channel of the National Waterway near Kottaravalavu, the bridge was meticulously constructed to adhere to stringent National Waterway standards. A remarkable 70-meter-long central span was engineered without any supporting pillars in the waterway, ensuring seamless water transport. The bridge boasts a total length of 458 meters and includes generous 1.5-meter-wide walkways on both sides, enhancing pedestrian access and safety.
This strategic link connects National Highway 66 with the Ambalappuzha-Thiruvalla State Highway, offering a crucial alternative route to the national highway from Karumadi to Thottappally Kottaravalavu, thereby significantly improving regional traffic flow and accessibility.
A Scenic Viewing Point
Adding to its allure, a specially designed viewing area has been incorporated at the very heart of the bridge, alongside the pedestrian walkway. This feature is expected to become a major draw for visitors and locals alike, offering picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Fisheries and Culture Minister Saji Cherian. Other notable attendees included H. Salam, MLA, District Collector Alex Varghese, and Ambalapuzha block panchayat president Sheeba Rakesh, underscoring the broad community and governmental support for this transformative project.
