In a momentous event poised to transform regional healthcare, Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, officially launched the MBBS course at the Kasaragod Government Medical College on Friday, September 3. She heralded this inauguration as a historic milestone for the district’s burgeoning health sector.
Addressing the gathering at the college in Ukkinadukka, Ms. George remarked, “This occasion finally provides answers to Kasaragod’s long-standing questions and concerns about the establishment of a medical college here, and indeed, how Kerala’s health sector will continue its progression.”
Looking ahead, the Minister announced exciting developments: a new block at the medical college hospital is slated to open within four months. Additionally, the hospital will soon host the State’s premier specialty center for endosulfan victims, equipped with advanced physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities. With the inclusion of Kasaragod and Wayanad, Ms. George proudly stated that every district in Kerala now boasts both a medical and a nursing college.
Emphasizing the collective effort, she noted, “Meeting the stringent criteria set by the National Medical Commission for approval was a considerable challenge, but our perseverance led to success. This is a shared triumph.” She extended heartfelt gratitude to all individuals and entities who have supported the project since the land was handed over in 2013, and construction commenced in 2016.
Recalling the resilience shown during the pandemic, the Minister highlighted how a temporary hospital was quickly established in the academic block when Karnataka imposed border restrictions. She also detailed the significant investments made: 273 teaching and non-teaching positions have been created, ₹160 crore allocated through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), and additional funds provided under the Kasaragod Development Package for a state-of-the-art laboratory.
Further enhancing medical services, Ms. George added that the cath lab at the district hospital has already performed 1,837 procedures, with plans underway to expand such critical facilities to all districts across the state.
The ceremonial function was expertly presided over by MLA N.A. Nellikunnu, with MP Rajmohan Unnithan attending as the distinguished chief guest. The official report was presented by Director of Medical Education K.V. Viswanathan, and MLAs C.H. Kunhambu and A.K.M. Ashraf were also among the notable attendees.
