1. Thousands Flock to Hasanamba Temple in Hassan
On October 10, 2025, the sacred doors of Hasanamba Temple in Hassan opened, welcoming thousands of devotees from across Karnataka. Despite a heavy downpour, visitors braved the weather, forming long queues from the early hours to catch a glimpse of the revered deity, Hasanamba. This year, the Hassan district administration has implemented new measures to manage the flow of VIPs and pass holders, arranging dedicated vehicles for their transport from the Inspection Bungalow, a notable change from previous years when they arrived in private vehicles.
2. Illegal Animal Rescue Center Dismantled in Udupi’s Saligrama
The Udupi Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), alongside local police and other agencies, conducted its fifth raid on an unauthorized animal rescue center in Chitrapadi, Saligrama, on October 9, 2025. Operated by Sudhindra Aithal, the facility was found to be illegally hoarding animals. During this latest operation, officials successfully rescued 16 additional animals, including 13 puppies, two kittens, and one semi-adult dog. These animals were severely dehydrated, weak, and suffering from various ailments such as viral infections, eye problems, injuries, and parasitic infestations, found living in unsanitary conditions.
To date, over 300 animals have been liberated from Mr. Aithal’s facility through these coordinated raids.
3. Former Minister Eshwarappa Calls for Clarity on Kuruba ST Status
Former minister K.S. Eshwarappa has publicly urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to clarify the state government’s stance on granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Kuruba community. Eshwarappa emphasized the need for the State Government to formally respond to the Central Government’s ongoing correspondence regarding this sensitive issue. He also asserted that the right to demand ST status extends to all deserving castes, not just the Kurubas.
Eshwarappa reminded the public that the previous Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government had already decided to recommend ST status for the Kurubas to the Centre, a move that followed significant protests and a ‘padayatra’ (march) led by community leaders, including Niranjanandapuri Swamy.
4. Karnataka Approves 12-Day Paid Menstrual Leave for Women
Labour Minister Santosh Lad announced on October 10, 2025, that the Karnataka government has unanimously approved a policy granting 12 days of paid menstrual leave annually to working women. This progressive decision was prompted by a proposal from Odisha-based social activist Ranjeeta Priyadarshini, who has been a vocal advocate for menstrual leave policies.
Minister Lad highlighted that this state initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing women’s welfare, especially benefiting those from economically disadvantaged and middle-class backgrounds across the state.
