The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) recently found itself at the center of a political controversy and public anger due to a social media post promoting Wayanad, a popular tourist destination in Kerala. The post, which featured an image of Wayanad, invited users to explore its “thrill or tranquillity,” highlighting trekking trails, waterfalls, and wildlife, with the tagline “Wayanad is waiting for you.”
This promotion of an out-of-state destination quickly drew sharp criticism online. Many users expressed dismay, with comments like “Shameful, delete this post asap. Why can’t you promote Karnataka places?” and “When did Wayanad become part of Karnataka?” voiced on social media.
While some defended the KSTDC’s move, arguing that tourism should not be confined by state borders and that the corporation has a history of promoting inter-state destinations, the criticism intensified. BJP leader R Ashoka directly targeted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him of acting as “Wayanad’s District Collector.” Ashoka further alleged that the state government was allocating significant taxpayer funds to Wayanad, which he linked to the constituency of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The controversy has led to political sparring, with the Congress party yet to issue an official response. Meanwhile, the KSTDC’s promotional post for Wayanad remains active on its social media platforms, underscoring the ongoing debate about regional tourism promotion and political affiliations.
