Karnataka’s Labour Minister, Santosh Lad, has proudly declared that workers in the unorganised sector are the state’s most invaluable asset. He underscored the government’s unwavering dedication to significantly improving their social and financial security.
Speaking at a recent event in Bidar, where smart cards were distributed and welfare initiatives promoted, Minister Lad emphasised the scale of this crucial workforce. The programme was a collaborative effort by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Labour Department, Karnataka State Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board, and the Transport Department.
Lad revealed that approximately 85% of Karnataka’s total workforce is employed within the unorganised sector. He detailed the ‘Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Karmikara Sahayahasta Yojane,’ a state-led initiative that has successfully identified 101 categories of unorganised workers, registering about 35 lakh beneficiaries. These workers are now receiving free smart cards, with 59,493 individuals in Bidar district alone having already benefited.
Further enhancing worker protection, the Minister announced that registered workers would be eligible for ₹1 lakh in accidental death compensation. Additionally, the new Karnataka Gig Workers Insurance Scheme will provide comprehensive insurance coverage of up to ₹4 lakh.
In a progressive move, a Karnataka Home-based Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Act is currently being drafted to extend robust legal and welfare protections to home-based workers.
Forest and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre commended Lad’s visionary leadership, acknowledging his pioneering efforts in launching revolutionary welfare programs, including the establishment of residential schools for workers’ children – a first-of-its-kind initiative nationwide.
Municipal Administration and Haj Minister Rahim Khan lauded Minister Lad as a leader profoundly dedicated to the welfare of the poor, Dalits, and the working class, actively striving to build a more equitable society.
During the event, beneficiaries received cheques under the ‘Aashadeep Scheme,’ and compensation was distributed to families of private vehicle drivers who had passed away, alongside the handing over of smart cards to numerous workers.
Key officials present at the significant gathering included Labour Secretary Mohammad Mohsin, Labour Commissioner H.N. Gopalakrishna, and Transport Commissioner Yogesh M.A.
