Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi revealed that the state government is seriously contemplating a ban on the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES). This decision stems from a surge of complaints alleging the organization’s involvement in disruptive activities within the sensitive border regions.
Addressing reporters on Saturday, Minister Jarkiholi emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We’ve received numerous reports indicating that MES has repeatedly engaged in activities designed to disrupt peace and order in the district. Their members have been observed shouting anti-Karnataka slogans and verbally attacking state leaders. Consequently, the government is poised to review a proposal to outlaw the organization altogether.”
Concurrently, MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi issued a stern warning to MES leaders, urging them to abandon their ongoing campaign for the merger of Belagavi with Maharashtra. Savadi pointed out, “You must cease your claims on Belagavi. If these demands persist, we will be compelled to advocate for Mumbai’s integration into Karnataka, given its significant Kannada-speaking population.”
Adding to the concerns, Belagavi Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabarao confirmed that MES proceeded with a ‘Black Day’ protest rally without securing the necessary permissions from local authorities. He highlighted that Shubham Shelke, a leader of the MES youth wing, had specifically breached his good behavior bonds by delivering inflammatory speeches and publicly insulting both Karnataka leaders and the state government. Legal action against Shelke is imminent, according to the Commissioner.
