Karnataka’s Energy Minister, K.J. George, has firmly stated that the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP) is a vital initiative by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, designed to address the state’s surging energy needs during peak demand periods. During a press interaction in Lakkavalli, Tarikere taluk, on Monday, October 6, 2025, Minister George acknowledged the persistent challenge of meeting energy requirements during these crucial hours.
He elaborated that the state experiences its highest energy consumption between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., as well as from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The Sharavathi PSP, poised to generate an impressive 2,000 MW, is expected to significantly alleviate this demand. George noted that project officials have already engaged with local communities to explain the necessity of the initiative. He assured the public that if any uncertainties or concerns remain, a dedicated team of officers would revisit the area to provide further clarification, directly addressing ongoing public opposition to the project.
Commitment to Afforestation
Acknowledging the public outcry, Minister George mentioned that resistance to such power projects is often anticipated. He attributed much of the opposition to misunderstandings surrounding the project’s details, which officials are actively working to dispel. He firmly refuted claims that the project would disrupt the river’s natural flow, clarifying that pipelines would be installed underground, allowing the surface area to be utilized for extensive afforestation efforts.
Regarding concerns about tree felling, George assured that all necessary procedures would be meticulously followed. He emphasized a robust compensatory afforestation program, stating that for every tree removed, ten new saplings would be planted.
The minister concluded his visit by participating in the inauguration of a new 30-bed community health center in Lakkavalli, joined by Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundurao and local MLA G.H. Srinivas.
