The Akhil Karnataka Buddha Dakhalaathi Andolana Samiti, a collective of Dalit organizations, has issued a significant appeal to followers of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: officially register their religion as “Buddhism” in the upcoming Socio-Educational survey. This crucial survey, conducted by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, is set to commence on September 22. The Samiti emphasizes that individuals should still specify their respective castes within the designated column.
During a recent press conference in Kalaburagi, Samiti members Devendra Hegde, Mariyappa Halli, and Arjun Bhadre reassured the public that embracing Buddhism as their declared religion would not jeopardize their entitlement to existing reservation benefits. They highlighted the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Act, 1990, which explicitly states that Scheduled Caste members who convert to Buddhism retain their recognition as Scheduled Castes and remain fully eligible for all associated benefits.
Mr. Hegde eloquently articulated that Buddhism transcends mere religious practice; it represents a formidable movement capable of dismantling the deep-rooted inequalities embedded within the traditional caste system.
Furthermore, Mr. Bhadre disclosed that the Karnataka State Scheduled Castes Right Communities Forum, during a meeting in Bengaluru on September 18, passed a resolution urging members of the ‘Right Communities’ to follow this directive. The resolution specifically advises them to declare Buddhism as their faith, immediately followed by their particular caste, during the forthcoming survey.
