Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on State BJP leaders this Monday (September 29, 2025), accusing them of “self-contradictory and politically motivated” opposition to the ongoing Social and Educational Survey. The Chief Minister firmly stated that this crucial exercise, spearheaded by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission, is not aimed at any particular caste or religion. Instead, it encompasses all nearly seven crore residents of Karnataka.
“This survey is not against anyone; it is for everyone,” Siddaramaiah asserted. “Its fundamental purpose is to foster social, economic, and educational equality by guaranteeing fair opportunities and an equitable share for all citizens.”
Driving Towards Equality
“Our government initiated this survey with a singular vision: to ensure equality across our society. However, the moment we began, the true intentions of those who often champion the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ slogan have been glaringly exposed,” the Chief Minister declared. He highlighted a concerning trend where BJP leaders are actively urging the public to boycott the survey or withhold specific details.
Siddaramaiah went on to criticize what he described as a “Manuvaada” mindset at the core of BJP leaders’ opposition. “This ideology, he suggested, seeks to maintain the existing stratification of wealth, opportunities, and representation, perpetuating the struggles of the poor, the backward classes, and women, thereby preserving caste and class inequalities.”
A Survey for Everyone
The Chief Minister emphasized that the survey is designed to bring to light the socio-economic realities not only of Dalits, backward classes, and minorities but also of the underprivileged within forward castes. This comprehensive revelation, he argued, is precisely what the BJP wishes to keep hidden.
Siddaramaiah further exposed the BJP’s inconsistency by pointing out that similar caste-based socio-economic surveys have already been conducted in Bihar and Telangana without any opposition from the party. He directly challenged their silence in those states and at the national level. “The Narendra Modi-led government itself is preparing to conduct a caste census. If the BJP opposes our survey, will they dare to openly oppose the Centre’s initiative before the Prime Minister?” he questioned.
Call for Cooperation
“The people of Karnataka must recognize the deceptive tactics of BJP leaders,” Siddaramaiah urged. “Their politically motivated, baseless claims should be dismissed. Everyone should wholeheartedly participate and offer complete cooperation in the ongoing Social, Economic, and Educational Survey. By working together, we can build an equitable society and transform Karnataka into a peaceful haven for all communities.”
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amidst growing debate, especially after Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok stated on September 29 that individuals are not obligated to provide personal information during the survey. Other BJP figures, including MP Tejasvi Surya, have openly called for a boycott. Adding to the controversy, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi recently voiced concerns that the caste survey data in Karnataka could be “sold,” casting further doubt on the intentions behind the exercise.
