Karnataka’s Labour Minister, Santosh Lad, announced Friday, October 10, 2025, that the state government’s unanimous decision to grant women 12 days of paid menstrual leave annually was a direct result of a proposal put forth by Odisha-based social activist, Ranjeeta Priyadarshini. This progressive step follows extensive advocacy for women’s well-being in the workplace.
During a press conference in Udupi, Minister Lad explained that Priyadarshini had presented her proposal for paid menstrual leave to him approximately a year prior. He emphasized that this government initiative is poised to significantly contribute to the welfare and empowerment of women, especially those in economically vulnerable and middle-income groups. He specifically highlighted the anticipated positive impact on women employed in sectors such as garment manufacturing and other small industries.
Lad further elaborated that a dedicated committee was formed to thoroughly examine the proposal, acknowledging the widespread challenges faced by working women due to menstrual health issues. The decision was finalized after gathering comprehensive public feedback from various regions across Karnataka. Under this new policy, eligible working women will be able to take one day of paid leave each month.
Speculation of Cabinet Reshuffle Dismissed
Addressing recent whispers about a potential cabinet expansion, Minister Lad clarified that any such decision rests solely with the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. He dismissed the rumors, stating that the Chief Minister frequently hosts dinner meetings, and no unusual importance should be attributed to them.
Concerning the ongoing raids by the Enforcement Directorate on K.C. Veerendra, the Congress MLA from Chitradurga, Lad asserted that the MLA had not contributed any funds towards the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. He commented, ‘I am not aware whether he would fund or not; but he has the capacity definitely,’ hinting at Veerendra’s financial standing.
Minister Lad then accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of applying double standards, citing allegations of a ₹60,000 crore scam against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and corruption charges against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswar Sarma. Lad sarcastically remarked that ‘when both aligned with the BJP/NDA, they become clean,’ implying political expediency over accountability.
He further alleged that the BJP had ‘purified’ over 25 politicians nationwide through similar means.
