In a significant announcement, Justice Surya Kant was officially appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Thursday, October 30, 2025. He is slated to assume his new role on November 24.
The Union Law Ministry’s Department of Justice formally released the notification confirming this pivotal appointment.
Justice Surya Kant will take over from the esteemed Justice Bhushan R Gavai, whose tenure concludes on November 23.
He is expected to serve as the Chief Justice for approximately 15 months, with his retirement set for February 9, 2027, upon reaching the age of 65.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the news, stating, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025.”
Minister Meghwal extended his warm wishes, adding, “I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him.”
