Guntur’s District Collector, A. Thameem Ansariya, is making a heartfelt plea to all citizens: join hands to transform Guntur into a truly clean and green district. Speaking at a recent ‘Clean Air’ rally, organized by the Guntur Municipal Corporation as part of the ‘Swarna Andhra – Swachh Andhra’ (SASA) initiative, she highlighted the state government’s ongoing commitment to environmental awareness, with special programs held every third Saturday of the month.
During her address, the Collector strongly encouraged residents to embrace public transportation and cycling at least once a week. This simple change, she emphasized, can significantly cut down on air pollution and dramatically improve air quality across the city. She proudly noted Guntur’s past achievements, including multiple ‘Swachh Awards’ at both state and district levels. Looking ahead, an ambitious plan is in motion to boost the district’s green cover beyond its current 7% through extensive tree plantation drives, with all government departments actively involved.
The rally itself was a vibrant display of community spirit, jointly flagged off near the District Court complex by Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindrababu, MLA Galla Madhavi, and Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu. MLA Galla Madhavi underscored Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s overarching vision for ‘Swarnandhra – Swachh Andhra,’ which champions community-led initiatives for cleanliness and environmental stewardship. Commissioner Srinivasulu shared an exciting goal: Guntur, recognized under the National Clean Air Programme, plans to plant an astounding five lakh saplings this season alone.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from a diverse group, including students, dedicated volunteers, government officials, and representatives from various NGOs. They marched together from Nagarampalem to Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandir, where they not only planted numerous saplings but also collectively took a solemn ‘Clean Air Pledge,’ committing to a healthier environment for all.
