In a truly heartwarming initiative, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bengaluru and Mysuru, through collaborative angioplasty workshops, has gifted a new lease on life to 105 patients from underprivileged backgrounds.
These life-saving medical procedures were made possible through a partnership with the Govindraju Subramani Heart Foundation and Medtronic Vascular Division. The specialized angioplasties and stenting operations were meticulously carried out over three dedicated days, from September 15 to 17.
The beneficiaries of this program represented the diverse fabric of vulnerable communities, including struggling agriculturists, diligent daily wage labourers, auto-rickshaw drivers, street vendors, garment factory workers, and senior citizens facing financial hardship. These patients hailed from various regions across India, including Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar. Remarkably, despite some patients requiring multiple stents, approximately 120 stents were provided entirely free of charge.
Dr. B. Dinesh, Director of Jayadeva, highlighted a worrying trend: heart-related diseases are increasingly afflicting economically weaker sections and rural populations, often at younger ages. Analysis of the 105 patients revealed that a significant 25% were under 50 years old, and 28% were women. The youngest recipient was a 28-year-old man working in private service, while the oldest was a 77-year-old man.
Further insights from Dr. Dinesh showed that underlying health conditions were prevalent among the patients: “60% of the beneficiaries were diabetic, and 54% suffered from hypertension. Additionally, about 33% were smokers, and over 35% presented with high cholesterol levels. This data clearly indicates that heart attack-related illnesses are no longer confined to the affluent or the elderly; they are now significantly impacting younger individuals, women, and those living in poverty.”
