In a strong statement, P.K. Kunhalikutty, the national general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), has branded the recent hijab controversy at St. Rita’s Public School in Palluruthy, Ernakulam, as a profound embarrassment for a state renowned for its secular ethos.
Speaking to reporters in Malappuram on Saturday, Kunhalikutty explained that the IUML had deliberately held back its response until now, recognizing that “certain divisive elements” were actively trying to inflame the situation. However, he emphasized that the party could no longer remain silent.
“We simply cannot stand by any longer,” Kunhalikutty asserted. “The increasing instances of such intolerance in Kerala are truly shameful. It is particularly disheartening that this issue has unfortunately led to a young girl’s education being cut short.”
Kunhalikutty pointed out that various communities manage schools across the state. He warned that if one group is permitted to adopt such an intolerant stance, it could set a dangerous precedent, encouraging others to follow suit.
He further stressed, “Our state has historically thrived on a policy of mutual respect and liberal understanding among different communities. This hijab dispute must not be allowed to further cleave our society apart and deepen existing divisions.”
