India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, recently met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. Their discussions centered on enhancing defense collaboration, especially in maritime security, and reinforcing Sri Lanka’s participation in various Indian-led naval events like the Admiral’s Cup, international fleet reviews, and the biennial MILAN exercises.
Admiral Tripathi’s four-day official tour to the island nation aimed at forging stronger bilateral naval relationships and identifying new collaborative ventures across the Indian Ocean Region.
Throughout his visit, the Naval Chief engaged with high-ranking Sri Lankan officials, including the Deputy Defence Minister, Air Vice Marshal, and Defence Secretary. These meetings highlighted a mutual commitment to improving interoperability, boosting naval cooperation, and exploring joint training and operational strategies.
On the first day of his visit, Admiral Tripathi paid respects at the Indian Peace Keeping Force memorial in Colombo, laying a wreath to honor the bravery of Indian soldiers. This gesture underscored the historical ties and shared sacrifices between India and Sri Lanka.
Speaking at the National Defence College in Colombo, Admiral Tripathi emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and strategic connections within the Indian Ocean Region. He stressed the vital importance of developing strong capabilities, fostering greater cooperation, and embracing technological advancements to tackle evolving maritime challenges. He also pointed to successful joint anti-piracy and narcotics interdiction operations as prime examples of effective Indo-Sri Lankan collaboration.
A special deck reception was held aboard the INS Satpura in Colombo, attended by prominent Sri Lankan officials, including Harshana Nanayakkara, Minister of Justice and National Integration, and India’s High Commissioner, Santosh Jha. This event was a vibrant celebration of the shared values of friendship, trust, and cooperation between the two nations.
The entire visit underscored India’s unwavering dedication to capacity building, strengthening military ties, and ensuring regional peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the Indian Ocean Region.
