New Delhi: India remains steadfastly committed to its principles of self-reliance, self-protection, and self-confidence, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar declared on Saturday at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. Addressing global leaders, Jaishankar highlighted that India will consistently champion its freedom of choice and serve as a voice for the Global South.
Opening his address with a traditional “Namaskar from the people of Bharat,” Jaishankar elaborated on the guiding concepts of India’s foreign policy in the current global landscape. ‘Atmanirbharta,’ he explained, signifies the nation’s dedication to developing indigenous capabilities, fostering its own strengths, and nurturing its talent, evident in advancements across manufacturing, space exploration, pharmaceuticals, and digital technology.
The principle of ‘Atmaraksha’ underscores India’s unwavering resolve to safeguard its citizens and protect national interests, both domestically and internationally. This translates to a zero-tolerance policy for terrorism, a strong defense of its borders, and the cultivation of strategic partnerships. Furthermore, ‘Atmavishwas’ reflects India’s confidence in its identity as a major global economy, a populous nation, and a country with a rich civilizational heritage.
Jaishankar stressed the crucial need for international cooperation, stating that “islands of prosperity cannot flourish in an ocean of turbulence.” He acknowledged the challenging times faced by the global community, where established norms are being questioned. In this context, he emphasized the importance of maintaining solidarity and strengthening friendships.
“Every member who can make this world a better place must have the opportunity to do their utmost. And for that to happen, reformed multilateralism is the obvious way,” Jaishankar concluded, asserting India’s readiness to contribute significantly to the UN’s mission in its ninth decade.
