Indian organizations are under intense pressure from cyber threats, facing an average of 3,237 attacks per week in August 2025. This figure, reported by Check Point Research – the threat intelligence division of the Tel Aviv-based cybersecurity firm, Check Point – is substantially higher than the global average of 1,994 weekly attacks.
The education sector in India has emerged as the prime target for these malicious activities, followed closely by government entities and consumer goods and services industries. This vulnerability within the education space mirrors a global trend, as it also tops the list worldwide with an average of 4,178 weekly attacks per organization in August alone, marking a 13% year-over-year increase.
Experts attribute the education sector’s susceptibility to its rapid digitization, which has expanded the potential attack surface. Furthermore, the sector is often underfunded in terms of cybersecurity defenses, making it an attractive and easier target for cybercriminals.
Beyond education, other Indian sectors significantly impacted by cyberattacks in the past four weeks include construction and engineering, telecommunications, information technology, energy and utilities, financial services, and biotech and pharma.
Globally, while India’s attack volume is particularly high, other regions also report alarming figures. Africa recorded the highest average weekly attacks at 3,239, just slightly above India. Asia-Pacific and Latin America also saw considerable activity with 2,877 and 2,865 attacks per week, respectively. These trends are largely driven by rapid digital transformation coupled with inconsistent investment in robust cyber resilience. Europe experienced a 13% year-over-year rise to 1,685 weekly incidents, while North America saw a notable 20% spike to 1,480 weekly attacks, with ransomware attacks being a significant contributing factor to this surge.
