In a landmark decision on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the Union Cabinet officially sanctioned the third phase of a vital program aimed at enhancing Central and State government medical colleges. This approval paves the way for a substantial increase of 5,000 postgraduate medical seats.
Additionally, the Cabinet extended a key central scheme focused on upgrading existing government medical institutions. This extension will introduce an impressive 5,023 new MBBS undergraduate seats, with an increased financial allocation of ₹1.50 crore per seat, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
An official statement highlighted that this sweeping initiative is poised to dramatically boost the nation’s undergraduate medical capacity and enhance the pool of specialist doctors. By creating more postgraduate opportunities, it will also facilitate the launch of new medical specialties throughout government medical colleges, addressing critical healthcare needs.
