In a momentous announcement on Thursday, September 25, 2025, India’s Defence Ministry officially inked a colossal ₹62,370 crore deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to procure 97 state-of-the-art Tejas light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force. This significant agreement, finalized in New Delhi under the ‘Buy (India-IDDM)’ category, specifically includes 68 fighter jets and 29 twin-seater variants, along with associated equipment.
These advanced LCA Mk1A aircraft are a testament to India’s burgeoning indigenous defense capabilities. They come equipped with cutting-edge technology, including the UTTAM AESA Radar and the ‘Swayam Raksha Kavach’ (Self-Protection Shield), alongside advanced control actuators. Impressively, over 64% of the aircraft’s content is indigenous, incorporating 67 newly developed Indian components.
Beyond bolstering the Indian Air Force’s operational strength, this ambitious project is set to ignite economic growth and foster job creation. The Ministry estimates that the agreement will be supported by an extensive network of 105 suppliers, generating approximately 11,750 jobs annually for the next six years.
Initial deliveries of these formidable jets are anticipated to commence in the financial year 2027-28. This recent order marks a crucial milestone as it represents the second major procurement for the indigenous LCA Mark 1A fighters. Previously, in February 2021, the government had commissioned 83 aircraft in a deal valued at approximately ₹48,000 crore, underscoring a consistent commitment to strengthening India’s self-reliance in defense and enhancing national preparedness.
