Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi recently marked Deepavali with Indian Army troops stationed in the challenging high-altitude regions of the Central Sector. During his visit on Sunday, October 19, 2025, General Dwivedi extended heartfelt festive greetings to all soldiers and their families, acknowledging their immense sacrifices.

His tour included forward posts in Pithoragarh and surrounding areas, where he personally lauded the indomitable spirit and profound commitment of the soldiers who perform their duties under extreme climatic conditions and across difficult terrains.

The Indian Army reported that General Dwivedi engaged directly with personnel in these remote locations, recognizing their remarkable resilience, courage, and steadfast devotion to serving the nation. He reiterated the Indian Army’s unwavering readiness to effectively counter evolving security challenges, emphasizing the core principle of “Service Before Self.” The Army Chief also took time to meet with veterans and local communities, acknowledging their vital contributions and the strong bond they share with the armed forces.

During his review of the operational posture of formations deployed along the Central Sector, the COAS received updates on ongoing capability enhancements. These advancements include state-of-the-art surveillance systems, specialized mobility platforms, the integration of next-generation technologies, and the optimization of reconnaissance assets. He expressed his appreciation for the troops’ professionalism, discipline, and tactical agility, particularly highlighting their innovative use of new equipment in the high mountains.

General Dwivedi underscored the strategic significance of the Kumaon region, which serves as a critical gateway to India’s borders with Nepal and China. He commended the patriotism and resilience of the local population and recalled the illustrious legacy of the Kumaon Regiment. Furthermore, he reviewed progress on initiatives under Operation Sadbhavna and the Vibrant Village Programme, such as the promotion of tent-based homestays in Garbyang and Kalapani, improvements in road and energy infrastructure, medical outreach programs, and agricultural support through polyhouses.

He affirmed that the Indian Army in Kumaon stands as a testament to “strength with compassion,” dedicated not only to defending the nation’s frontiers but also to empowering and supporting border communities.

Concluding his impactful visit, General Dwivedi reaffirmed the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintaining operational excellence, fostering civil-military harmony, and upholding the highest traditions of duty, honor, and dedicated service to the nation.
