New Delhi: India Post is gearing up to significantly enhance its Speed Post services, with Union Minister for Communications and Development of North-East Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, announcing the upcoming launch of guaranteed 24-hour and 48-hour delivery options. These accelerated services are slated to begin in January 2026, marking a new era for mail and parcel delivery across the country.
During a press conference in New Delhi, where he highlighted the achievements of his ministries over the past year, Minister Scindia shared his vision for the postal service: “We are redefining the meaning of speed post.” He elaborated that the new 24-hour Speed Post service will ensure mail reaches its destination within a day, while the 48-hour service will guarantee delivery within two days.
Beyond speed enhancements, India Post plans to introduce eight new products next year. These innovations will span mail, parcel, and international services, including features like next-day parcel delivery, improved last-mile parcel solutions, and comprehensive end-to-end parcel services, along with new tracked international shipping options.
The minister also touched upon the broader achievements of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). India’s progress in digital connectivity and security was evident in its improved ranking to 49th in the Network Readiness Index 2024 (up from 60th) and its Tier-1 status in the Global Cybersecurity Index, boasting a score of 98.49/100.
Further bolstering the nation’s digital infrastructure, the Sanchar Saathi platform has been instrumental in enhancing digital safety. It has recorded 20 crore visits, facilitated the recovery of 6 lakh lost phones, and helped disconnect 82 lakh fraudulent connections. Additionally, the International Spoofed Calls Prevention System has blocked over 1.35 crore fraudulent calls within 24 hours of its launch, and the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) has flagged 3.5 lakh mobile numbers, leading to the freezing of 10 lakh associated accounts.
In a significant development for the public sector, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) reported its first quarterly profit in 18 years, marking a substantial turnaround after extensive restructuring efforts.
The minister also highlighted the progress in the North-East region, noting a 74% increase in expenditure in FY 2024-25, reaching ₹3,447.71 crore. Digital initiatives like the Poorvottar Vikas Setu portal have significantly improved project oversight and operationalization, with 97% of projects inspected and 91% made operational.
