India has reiterated its unwavering commitment to assist Nepal, emphasizing its role as a ‘first responder’ in times of natural calamities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance comes as heavy rains unleash widespread destruction and tragic loss of life across the Himalayan nation.
This latest disaster places an additional burden on Nepal, which is currently overseen by an interim government established after last month’s impactful Gen-Z protests that led to the overthrow of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s administration.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Modi expressed his distress over the human toll and infrastructural damage in Nepal. “The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time. As a friendly neighbor and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required,” he affirmed.
Nepal’s meteorological department issued urgent warnings on Sunday, indicating that major rivers, including the Kosi, Tamor, Arun, and Sunkoshi, are expected to surge past danger levels. The forecast also highlights a significant risk of flash floods across numerous districts, including Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Panchthar, Terhathum, Dhankuta, Sunsari, Udayapur, Saptari, Siraha, and Dhanusa.
Initial reports paint a grim picture, with at least 47 individuals feared dead and vital infrastructure completely washed away. The alarming rise of the Kosi River has also intensified flood alerts in northern Bihar, a region frequently impacted by the cross-border river’s devastating overflows.
