Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday, September 18, 2025, that he had a “warm conversation” with his Nepalese counterpart, Sushila Karki. This diplomatic exchange highlights the ongoing close ties between India and Nepal.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Modi conveyed his “heartfelt condolences” regarding the recent tragic loss of lives in Nepal. He further reiterated India’s “steadfast support” for the interim government’s efforts to restore peace and stability. The Prime Minister also extended warm greetings to Ms. Karki and the people of Nepal on the occasion of their upcoming National Day.
Ms. Karki assumed leadership of Nepal’s interim government just last week. Her appointment came in the wake of widespread, and at times violent, anti-corruption protests led by the nation’s youth, which ultimately resulted in the resignation of the previous coalition government headed by K.P. Sharma Oli.
Earlier, on September 13, during a public gathering in Imphal, Prime Minister Modi had already congratulated Ms. Karki on her new role, underscoring India’s deep-rooted friendship with Nepal by referring to it as a “close friend and trusted partner.”
