India has officially upgraded its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, transitioning its mission in Kabul from a technical status to a full embassy. This decision is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance engagement with the Taliban administration, although it does not constitute formal recognition of the current regime.
The announcement follows a recent visit to India by the Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, marking a notable step in bilateral relations. Following discussions, India had indicated its intention to enhance its diplomatic role in Kabul. India had previously closed its missions and evacuated its staff after the Taliban takeover in 2021, but re-established a technical presence in June 2022.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the embassy’s establishment aims to bolster India’s contributions to Afghanistan’s development, humanitarian aid, and capacity-building efforts, aligning with the aspirations of the Afghan people. While an ambassador is not expected at this stage, a chargé d’affaires will lead the embassy, reflecting India’s cautious approach without full recognition.
The Taliban have indicated their intent to reciprocate by sending diplomats to their embassy in New Delhi, further normalizing relations. This development occurs amidst evolving regional dynamics, with the Taliban reiterating assurances against the use of Afghan soil for activities detrimental to other nations.
