New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the partnership between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) serves as a crucial foundation for global stability and development, particularly in today’s uncertain times. Speaking at the ASEAN-India Summit, Modi noted that both entities are actively collaborating across diverse sectors, including digital inclusion, food security, and the establishment of resilient supply chains.
The year 2026 has been designated as the “ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation,” underscoring a shared commitment to enhancing collaboration in technology, education, tourism, health, green energy, and cybersecurity.
Modi addressed the summit virtually, where progress in bilateral relations was reviewed, and strategies for strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership were discussed. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India in person.
“Even in this era of uncertainties, the India-Asean Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has continued to make steady progress. And this strong partnership of ours is emerging as a robust foundation for global stability and development,” Modi stated, implicitly referencing the shifting global trade dynamics.
The summit’s theme, “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” was reflected in the joint efforts highlighted by Modi, particularly in digital inclusion, food security, and ensuring robust supply chains amidst global challenges.
“India has stood firmly with its ASEAN friends in every disaster. Our cooperation in HADR, maritime security and the blue economy is growing rapidly. In view of this, we are declaring 2026 as the ‘Asean-India Year of Maritime Cooperation’,” he announced.
Modi also expressed optimism that the 21st century belongs to India and ASEAN, envisioning a bright future for humanity through the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. He affirmed India’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with ASEAN towards these goals.
Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and the current chair of ASEAN, acknowledged India’s role, stating that the bloc’s relations with India are a “force for stability and mutual prosperity.” He added that India’s economic advancements would benefit both parties.
Discussions also included the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) from 2009, with India advocating for a swift conclusion to address concerns about certain ASEAN members facilitating indirect market access for Chinese goods. Ibrahim indicated that ASEAN aims to finalize this review by the end of 2025.
The AITIGA, under review since 2023, seeks to modernize trade agreements for balanced growth. ASEAN is a significant trade partner for India, contributing about 11% to India’s global trade, with bilateral trade valued at $121 billion in fiscal 2023-24. However, India faces a trade deficit, with concerns over non-tariff barriers and rules of origin compliance.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, emphasized the importance of deeper cooperation with India for addressing shared challenges, including maritime security and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He commended India’s consistent support for international law.
Modi reiterated that India and ASEAN together represent a quarter of the global population and are key partners in the Global South. He underscored ASEAN’s importance as a cornerstone of India’s Act East policy and reaffirmed India’s support for ASEAN centrality in the Indo-Pacific.
The summit also welcomed Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member. A Joint Leaders’ Statement on Sustainable Tourism was issued, focusing on promoting eco-friendly tourism, conserving cultural heritage, and ensuring growth while benefiting local communities.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held separate meetings with ASEAN counterparts, discussing bilateral ties and ways to strengthen cooperation.
