On Monday, October 13, 2025, India and Canada announced a comprehensive set of initiatives aimed at revitalizing their bilateral relationship. This diplomatic breakthrough followed productive discussions in New Delhi between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who is currently on an official visit to India.
Key agreements include the swift resumption of ministerial-level talks on bilateral trade and investments. The two nations also committed to re-establishing the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue to foster collaboration in renewable energy and critical minerals. Furthermore, they plan to relaunch the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee and encourage Canadian participation in India’s AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 19-20, 2026.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his delight at welcoming Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New Delhi. He stated on social media that they held constructive discussions aimed at restoring and invigorating the foundational mechanisms for their partnership. They also exchanged perspectives on global developments and collaborative approaches to shared challenges.
In the agricultural domain, both countries agreed to work towards creating stable and sustainable supply chains. They will also focus on enhancing agri-value chains through the exchange of best practices and technological collaboration, boosting nutritional security, promoting the conversion of agricultural waste into energy and organic fertilizers, and advancing innovative solutions for climate-resilient farming and food systems.
Furthermore, a renewed collaboration in higher education and research was agreed upon, with particular emphasis on joint research partnerships in Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and financial technology (fintech).
On the same day, Foreign Minister Anand also held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. She later posted that both Canada and India are committed to elevating their relationship. This builds on the positive momentum from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with PM Modi at the recent G7 Summit. Anand emphasized that this enhanced relationship would continue to prioritize law enforcement and security dialogue while concurrently expanding economic ties between the two nations.
