India and Australia are at a critical juncture to enhance their defense relationship and collaboratively build a more secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. This was highlighted by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh during his recent visit to Australia.
Addressing Australian business leaders in Sydney, Singh extended an invitation for collaboration and innovation, encouraging partnerships to develop advanced military platforms and cutting-edge technologies. He emphasized that by working together, both nations can become key enablers of peace and security in the region.
During his two-day trip, Singh expressed India’s readiness to partner with Australian companies for the co-development and co-production of sophisticated defense systems. This includes areas like propulsion technologies, autonomous underwater vehicles, flight simulators, and advanced materials.
“Our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in 2020, places us at a pivotal point to redefine our defense ties, moving beyond mere partnership to become co-creators for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” Singh stated at the India-Australia Defence Industry Business Roundtable.
He welcomed Australia’s initiative for reciprocal provision of defense articles and services, noting that Australia’s recognition of India as a top-tier partner, with reduced regulatory barriers for technology sharing, signifies a strong foundation of trust.
Singh further elaborated on the significant opportunities available, including joint ventures in naval vessel production, ship repair, refits, maintenance services for Australian vessels in India, and joint research in autonomous systems and green shipbuilding technologies.
By strengthening supply chains, building shared capabilities, and fostering innovation, both nations can contribute to a resilient and self-reliant Indo-Pacific. Singh urged the Australian business community to seize this moment for partnerships that are not only economically advantageous but also strategically transformative.
Highlighting India’s robust shipbuilding infrastructure, diverse manufacturing base, and a growing private sector, Singh affirmed India’s commitment to being a reliable partner. Indian shipyards are capable of providing refit, mid-life upgrades, and maintenance services for the Royal Australian Navy and other partner nation vessels.
The minister also pointed out that government initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Production Linked Incentive’ schemes, coupled with digital transformation efforts, have created a fertile ground for innovation and investment in India’s defense sector.
