The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday, September 27, 2025, that a depression currently situated over south coastal Odisha, near north Andhra Pradesh, is expected to shift westward and diminish into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, this depression has been moving at approximately 15 kmph, and by 8:30 AM on Saturday, it was centered over Odisha’s southern interior. Specifically, it was located about 50 km east-northeast of Gunpur, 130 km south of Phulbani in Odisha, and 230 km east of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.
The weather agency further elaborated that the system is very likely to continue its westward trajectory across south Odisha and Chhattisgarh, gradually losing strength over the course of the next 24 hours.
Currently, a trough extends from this depression over south interior Odisha all the way to Goa, passing through Telangana and north interior Karnataka, at an altitude of 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level.
As a result of this weather pattern, there’s a possibility of light thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph, in isolated areas across Parvatipuram, Manyam, and East Godavari districts within the next three hours. Similar conditions are also anticipated for Srikakulam and Alluri Sitarama Raju districts.
Looking ahead, the IMD also indicated the potential formation of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the north Andaman Sea around September 30. This circulation is then expected to lead to the development of a low-pressure area over the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by approximately October 1.
