The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad has officially embarked on its second phase of expansion, with the commencement of construction activities. The momentous occasion was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a pivotal step in the institute’s journey towards enhanced capacity and modern infrastructure.
This ambitious second phase is a substantial investment, costing an estimated ₹2,600 crore, and is set to significantly increase the institute’s built-up area by approximately 1.55 lakh square meters. The new additions will encompass state-of-the-art academic blocks, comfortable residential complexes for students and faculty, and cutting-edge sports facilities, alongside various other essential amenities.
With a target completion date of 2028-29, this expansion aims to dramatically boost IIT Palakkad’s capacity, enabling it to host roughly 2,600 students, supported by a proportionate increase in academic and administrative staff. A key highlight of this development is the inclusion of a modern research park, envisioned to be a hub for innovation and to foster stronger collaborations with industry partners, driving forward groundbreaking research.
Expressing immense optimism, IIT Palakkad Director A. Seshadri Sekhar underscored the significance of this phase, calling it a major milestone for the institution. He confidently stated, “I am confident we will have plenty more to celebrate as IIT Palakkad continues to grow,” reflecting a clear vision for the institute’s thriving future.
