The Hyderabad traffic police have initiated a rigorous campaign to scrutinize private buses operating within and from the city. This special drive is primarily focused on bolstering passenger safety, ensuring vehicle fitness, and settling any outstanding fines. During a recent hour-long inspection on Friday night, authorities examined between 150 and 200 buses, successfully collecting approximately ₹1 lakh in pending penalties.
According to ACP Traffic (West Zone) K. Hariprasad, these inspections will now be a regular fixture at key departure hubs, such as Maitrivanam, a common starting point for various inter-city private bus services. He stated, “We are making sure that long-distance routes have two drivers onboard and are taking action against those who don’t comply. We’re also meticulously checking the mechanical condition of these vehicles and confirming that essential emergency equipment like safety hammers and exits are fully functional.”
Mr. Hariprasad highlighted the critical role bus drivers and conductors play in passenger education, drawing parallels to airline safety briefings. He urged, “Just like on flights, bus staff need to inform passengers about emergency exits and how to use hammers to break windows in the event of a fire or collision. This basic awareness can be the deciding factor in saving lives.”
Vehicles found without the necessary valid fitness certificates are promptly reported to the Regional Transport Office for further legal action. The officer emphasized that this proactive initiative stems from recent distressing incidents involving private buses, including the unfortunate Kurnool highway accident. These surprise inspections are set to continue, aiming to instill higher safety standards and greater accountability across all private bus operations.
